Natural Medicines for Hot Flashes Can Be Safe And Effective

by Patsy Hamilton

Of all the natural medicines for hot flashes that have been studied and evaluated for safety and effectiveness, black cohosh appears to be the best. When you think of natural remedies for hot flashes, you usually think of herbs and other supplements that can relieve them, but there are lifestyle and dietary factors that can contribute to their frequency and intensity.

Most menopausal women can describe a hot flash for you. If you are awake, you can feel the heat start in your chest, work its way up your neck, face and to the top of your head. No one really knows what causes them. They are believed to be related to lessening estrogen production by the ovaries. Since, surgical removal of the ovaries, at any age, causes them and estrogen replacement therapy relieves them. According to some studies, the majority of women do not feel that hot flashes have a major impact on their quality of life, but, undoubtedly, many women would disagree.

When they happen at night, you may wake up with a pool of sweat on your chest, finding linens wet. Once you cool off, you often feel chilled. Hands and feet often feel cold while the chest, neck and face feel hot. Hot flashes that occur at night are often referred to as night sweats and they can affect the quality of a womans sleep, sometimes make it difficult to get back to sleep and even cause insomnia in some women.

Because hormone replacement therapy has been shown to have numerous unwanted side effects and is linked to health risks, such as blood clots and stroke, natural medicines for hot flashes have become increasingly popular. This popularity has some doctors and researchers concerned about safety issues related to long term use of herbs. Most herbalists separate herbs into three groups; those that are common food items or commonly used to flavor food, those that are strictly used for medicinal purposes and those that are dangerous, poisonous and not safe for human consumption. The natural remedies for hot flashes that have been used historically by native healers and are commonly recommended by herbalists belong to the first and second groups.

Traditional healers tested plants by ingesting them or learned about their poisonous affects by treating others who had ingested them. Modern day scientists test plant components first on cell lines in a laboratory setting, then on animals and finally on people if relative safety has been established. These are the same trials that newly designed synthetic medications must pass, before being marketed. When it comes to new medicines, the safety of long-term use cannot be readily established and many drugs are released and then removed from the market, because of safety concerns. When it comes to natural medicines for hot flashes or any other condition, the safety of long-term use has been established by historical use, but for those who are still unsure, we can consult the scientists.

Of all of the natural medicines for hot flashes that have currently been evaluated, black cohosh appears to be the safest and most effective. However, certain lifestyle and dietary factors can interfere with its effectiveness. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, salty and spicy foods can all trigger hot flashes. Regular exercise, alone, can reduce their frequency. If you are sedentary and you smoke, drink coffee and alcohol on a regular basis, natural remedies for hot flashes may not be effective.

Correlating Menopause and Osteoporosis

by Nathalie Fiset

Menopause occurs when there is not enough supply of estrogen in the body. With the absence of this important hormone in a womans body, there are lot of adjustments to be done and changes to prepare for.

Studies show that the loss of estrogens accelerates bone loss in the span of five to eight years. One of the most common areas affected by the loss of estrogen in the body is the skeletal systemspecifically the bones that lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, as defined, pertains to the thinning of the bones. As the bones become thinner and thinner, it becomes weaker and breaks more easily. The bones that are often affected include those of the spine, wrists, and hips.

COMBATING OSTEOPOROSIS CAUSED BY MENOPAUSE

As women grow older and older, risks of having osteoporosis becomes greater. Studies show that aside from aging, more and more women and men suffer become prone to osteoporosis especially if he/she has a family history of osteoporosis, fair skinned like blonds and red heads, engage in low calcium diet, lives a sedentary or physically inactive, underweight, obese, smokers and those with serious illness and disease.

In order to avoid, or at least, lessen the burden of having osteoporosis, here are some recommended lifestyle changes that you can do by yourself.

1. Have enough calcium in your body. In order to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, men women alike should start taking about 1,000 mg of calcium every day that is equals to about three serves of dairy food. Calcium is naturally found in various foods and can also be added in powder form. Having enough calcium supply in your diet will ensure strengthened bones. Aside from eating foods rich in calcium, taking in calcium tablets can also support your calcium supply. For those who are drinking calcium to avoid further osteoporic problem, bear in mind that you should reach a total daily intake of 1,000 milligrams daily before menopause and 1,500 milligrams daily after menopause.

2. Physical activity is quite crucial to avoid further complications of osteoporosis. Recent studies show that people with or without osteoporosis can also benefit from spontaneous physical activity. Doing regular exercises like walking throughout your life can help in the reduction of osteoporosis risks because it reduces the rate of bone loss while protecting the remaining bone tissues. Experts say that the required minimum exercise for people who are suffering with osteoporosis is still unknown, but physical activity of 15 to 60 minutes at least thrice a week in highly recommended. Here are some of the general recommendations for exercise approved by most experts.

- Make sure that you have visited your doctor or health care provider before you start any exercise program.

- If you are already suffering from osteoporosis, avoid high impact activities or those exercise requiring sudden and forceful movements.

- Light weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, and weight training are generally recommended.

- Make sure that you can sustain the frequency of your physical activity.

- Take strength training at least once or twice a week to prepare your body to more strenuous physical activities.

- Choose exercises that flexibility exercises or stretching.

- No matter how you love the water, avoid swimming because its not a weight bearing exercise. The buoyancy of the water will only counteract the effects of gravity and will be more difficult for you to maintain your balance.

- Choose exercises that will help you reduce bone loss, improve your muscle strength, balance, and fitness so the incidence of falls and fractures will be lessened.

Indeed, there is no easy way to address osteoporosis. Being a complex condition involving hormonal, lifestyle, nutritional, and environmental factors, osteoporosis can only be cured through proper exercise, diet, and supplements. Aside from these, medical preventions and treatments such as hormone therapy (HT), Bisphosphonates, selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), potential therapies like Tibolone (Livial) and parathyroid hormone are available today.

Tips in Coping With Menopause

by Nathalie Fiset

One of the major milestones in the life of a woman is menopause. This is the period when the woman will no longer have their monthly periods. This also means that this is the end of their being fertile. Once a woman goes into menopause, they can no longer bear a child.

Menopause occurs when a womans ovaries run out of eggs. There is also a decrease in the production of some sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and to some degree, androgen. A woman has in her lifetime about half a million egg cells in her ovaries. From these half a million eggs, only about 400 to 500 eggs mature and are released during the menstrual cycle. The rest of the eggs degenerate.

When a woman is still in her reproductive years, hormones are secreted by the body to thicken the lining of the uterus. These hormones, progesterone and estrogen prepare the body to nourish the egg. If this is fertilized, then it will develop into a fetus, a baby. If not, secretion of the hormones will lag down and the lining will slowly thin down. This is when menstruation occurs.

Because of age, ovaries of women will slowly decrease its secretion of the hormones. This often starts when they are in mid-30s. In their late 40s, they will often have irregular menstrual cycle because of the fluctuating levels of the hormones. By the time a woman reaches 40 years old, their period will eventually stop. This is menopause.

Menopause can be hard for some women especially when they are not prepared for it. Because the female hormones will stop its secretion, women may feel several changes in their bodies. Most common of these are hot flushes, weight gain and bone problem. Below are some tips that help you cope with menopause.

1. Make it cooler

Hot flushes may be solved by medications but some people do not opt for this due to costs or fear of side effects. To help minimize this, try to wear light clothes. Wear many layers, which you can take off when you hot flashes start. There are also mini fans that you can carry with you in your bag. They are battery operated so there is no need to look for an electric fan

2. Engage in physical activity

Expect to become heavier during menopause. When your pants suddenly wont fit you, dont be surprised. It is not because you have suddenly been eating a lot lately but because of menopause.

Because of the changes in the body particularly in the hormonal levels that the body secretes, women gain weight during menopause. To combat this, it is good to engage in physical activity. This also strengthens the bones, which tends to weaken during this period in life.

Another advantage in engaging in physical activity especially in sports is the fact that it will also help you maintain your weight. Remember that metabolism will naturally slow down as you grow older. So whether or not you are menopausal, physical activity will benefit you.

3. Take your vitamins

One of the important things that a woman should do to cope well with menopause is to take vitamins regularly. Hormonal changes in the body weaken the bones. This is why it is vital that women have adequate calcium intake. They should also watch the levels of their vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D and calcium play a major role in reducing their risk of developing osteoporosis, which frequently occurs in women who are in their menopausal ages. Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease that may lead to bone fractures. Women undergoing menopause is recommended to take at least 1200 mg per day of calcium and about 400-600 IU of Vitamin D for calcium absorption.

Menopause and Progesterone

by Cathy Taylor

Do women going through menopause have lowered levels of progesterone?

Recent research tells us that women do suffer from decreased levels of progesterone and also experience other symptoms such as unexplained weight gain (particularly in the stomach area), depression, fatigue, hair loss, memory loss, mood swings, migraines and loss of libido. A natural cream can balance estrogens without side effects.

Progesterone and estrogen are the two main hormones made by womens ovaries when they are menstruating. Smaller amounts of these hormones are also secreted by the adrenal glands. It's necessary for the survival of the fertilized ovum, its embryo as well as the fetus during gestation.

Progesterone's primary functions include: acting as a precursor to estrogen and testosterone; it maintains uterine lining and aids in gestation; protects against fibrocystic breasts, endometrial and breast cancer; acts as a natural diuretic, helps use fat for energy; can be a natural antidepressant; aids thyroid hormone action; normalizes blood clotting; restores sex drive; normalizes blood sugar, zinc and copper levels; restores proper cell oxygen levels, has a thermogenic effect; builds bone and helps to protects against osteoporosis.

Some doctors feel that menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and heart disease may not be due to a deficiency of estrogen, but to a relative estrogen excess due to progesterone deficiency.

Synthetic progestins, such as an HRT drug called Provera (a synthetic chemical), do not have the same biological effects as natural progesterone and have been known to cause side effects including: fluid retention, depression, breast tenderness, stroke, jaundice, blood clotting, and cervical erosions.

On the other hand, natural progesterone has no known side effects and has been found to be helpful in alleviating symptoms such as PMS and hot flashes. It has also been credited with helping to prevent osteoporosis.

Many doctors now prescribe for women in menopause the use of a low-dose, natural progesterone cream during the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle. The cream is easily absorbed into thin-skin areas such as the breasts, inner arms, neck or belly by the subcutaneous fat and then released into the bloodstream. You should be careful of the dosage level in these products. Some may have none to very little and others provide 20-30 mg in an average application. It's always best to first check with a doctor.

Menopause Symptom Severity Varies From Woman To Woman

by Patsy Hamilton

Although all women eventually experience menopause, symptom severity varies from mild to severe. Complimentary and alternative medicine for menopause has become increasingly popular, since research has shown that hormone replacement therapy can cause other serious health problems.

For many years hormone replacement therapy was the treatment of choice for women experiencing moderate to severe symptoms associated with menopause. In the seventies researchers learned that estrogen replacement increased a womans risk of developing cancer in the lining of the uterus. Adding synthetic progesterone to estrogen was believed to be safer. But, the most recent research indicates that any type of hormone replacement therapy increases a womans risk of developing blood clots and stroke. An increased incidence of heart disease and breast cancer has been found in women using hormone replacement on a long-term basis. Experts currently suggest that if a woman chooses hormone replacement therapy, she should use the lowest dosage for the shortest possible time.

When menopause symptom severity is mild to moderate, relief may be achieved by making lifestyle and dietary changes or by adding appropriate herbal and dietary supplements. Researchers have evaluated many different types of complimentary and alternative medicine for menopause, with varied results. Different treatments work for some women and not for others. It may take some time and a little effort on an individual womans part to find the safest and most effective treatment plan.

When menopause symptom severity is moderate to severe, most doctors still recommend hormone replacement therapy. However, depending upon the symptoms that a woman is suffering from, it may be possible to reduce the severity of her symptoms by changing her diet and/or lifestyle. The most common symptoms are hot flashes, night sweats, and trouble sleeping, vaginal dryness and mood swings. Researchers evaluating the effectiveness of complimentary and alternative medicine for menopause typically focus on these symptoms.

Research indicates that if a woman chooses to use hormone replacement therapy, it is usually because of hot flashes and night sweats. Complimentary and alternative medicine for menopause that has been shown to relieve hot flashes and night sweats by at least 40% includes acupuncture, soy isoflavones and black cohosh. Certain anti-depressants have been shown to provide some relief, but are not approved by the FDA for this purpose. Stress management techniques carry many health benefits, no health risks and should definitely be added to any treatment plan, regardless of the menopause symptom severity. Other experimental drugs are currently being evaluated, but these are not yet available.

There has been some research evaluating the effectiveness of low-dose estrogen replacement and it may be effective for some women, but it may still be risky, particularly for women with a personal or family history of breast cancer. Soy isoflavones are plant components that have an estrogen-like effect on a womans body. They are believed to be safe, but there has been no research concerning long term use. It is considered wise for women at high risk for cancer to avoid these types of plant estrogens or use them in moderation.

Acupuncture has no known health risks. The results from research concerning effectiveness are mixed. Some trials have shown a reduction in menopause symptoms severity, while others have shown no more benefit than placebo.

Of the many herbs that have been recommended as complimentary and alternative medicine for menopause, black cohosh is the most effective. Research has shown that it can reduce menopause symptom severity by nearly as much as hormone replacement therapy. However, researchers have been unable to isolate an active component. It does not appear to have any estrogen-like effect and is considered a safe choice for women with a risk of breast or endometrial cancer. The plant was used historically by Native American healers for many different purposes, including correcting hormonal imbalance. It is available in many different health supplements for women. Treat Symptoms Menopause

Hot Flashes Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Menopause - But Relief Is Available

by Patsy Hamilton

Hot flashes are symptoms of menopause, but may begin several years before menstruation actually stops and can last for several years afterwards. A hot flash may occur at any time of the day, but there are certain triggers that can worsen the severity and increase the frequency.

Doctors do not know exactly what causes hot flashes. They are considered a vasomotor symptom, because dilation of the blood vessels and changes in circulation are involved. They are believed to be directly related to decreasing estrogen production by the ovaries, a natural part of the aging process. Since, estrogen replacement therapy relieves hot flashes; lack of estrogen is probably the cause.

When a hot flash occurs at night, usually referred to as night sweats, it can interrupt a womans sleep, leading to insomnia, decreasing energy levels and overall sense of well being. A recent study indicates that the majority of peri-menopausal women do not feel that hot flashes affect their quality of life as much as emotional changes and mood swings, but mood swings sometimes trigger hot flashes. When a person is angry or frustrated, body temperature raises and anything that raises body temperature can trigger a hot flash.

Sometimes referred to as hot flushes, these sudden changes in body temperature are not believed to threaten a womans health. No medical treatment is required, unless they happen frequently, are severe or disruptive to a womans life. Most women can get relief by using an herbal supplement called black cohosh. This herb was used historically by Native American healers to correct symptoms related to hormonal imbalances, to help regulate menstrual cycles, as a diuretic and a mild sedative.

Research has shown that women get as much relief from hot flashes when using black cohosh as they do from estrogen replacement. It is highly recommended for women who can not risk estrogen replacement therapy, because of previous cancers or other concerns. Because, the Womens Health Initiative found that the health benefits of hormone replacement therapy do not outweigh the risks, most doctors no longer recommend this treatment unless numerous symptoms are present and are severely impairing a womans ability to function, her relationships or her quality of life. Black cohosh, on the other hand, is being recommended more and more.

There are a number of substances that can trigger hot flashes. Experts advise women to avoid caffeine, salt, alcohol and nicotine. Spicy foods can also bring on a hot flash. For more information about the symptoms associated with menopause and ways to relieve them, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide.

Give Menopause its Assigned Role

by Patricia Little

Menopause has been promoted as a most important, time consuming challenge ridden time of a ladys life. Certainly some of us experience more side effects than others but it is also an expected time of life where changes abound and become the basis for the second half.

These other changes of similar or more necessary importance must be recognized, addressed and worked on for the next phase.

Families are growing up and moving into a variety of new phases. Some are getting involved in serious study. Jobs with a career focus are being sought whilst relationships outside of the household are increasing and possibly growing into the permanent long term relationship that has been encouraged. Even you or a husband could be moving into a higher position that has been sought for more than half a lifetime.

Most previous roles are still relevant and very important but new attitudes bathed in love and wisdom must be taken on at a similar level. In most cases its of little relevance to promote the natural role of change of life in order to build the new friendships and advice.

From a natural point of view a basic healthy diet is essential in order to maintain a level of respect from family and friends. The vast array of new menopausal behavior must be quietly dealt with whilst necessary change to family situations becomes vital.
